The Department of statistics was established in 1988 with the major objective of developing it into a centre of excellence in th region, in statistics and its applications and to provide facilities for training, study and research in these areas. Dr. K Kumaranakutty is the founder professor of the department. The Department is rooted in philosophy of training and research that emphasizes the intimate relationship between University and community and seeks to promote the criterion of a scientifically motivated society.

The course is so designed as to give intensive training to the students covering the important branches of the statistics. The programme helps to develop students abilities necessary for immediate employment as statisticians and prepare them for more advanced study. The employment prospects for individuals with strong technical skills in statistics are excellent in Research Organizations, Government, Industry and Education.

Admission Criteria: Candidates with B.Sc. Degree with 50% marks with (i) statistics main or (ii) mathematics main with statistics as one of the subsidiary subjects are eligible. Applicants will be ranked on the basis of the marks obtained in the common university entrance examination.

Details of the Infrastructure and equipments available: The Department has its own Library conveniently located in the same building. The library houses books and journals on statistics and related fields. It has over 200 text books and has number of old statistical journals. It has a computer lab with twenty two personal computer, SPSS package and some other utilities like OHP and LCD projectors, catering to needs of staff and students of the department.
Research: Research in department is highly regarded nationally and internationally. Staff distinctions include a Commonwealth Scholarship and a Commonwealth Fellowship tenable at U.K and a few research Fellowships in Canada. The rare several research collaborations with local, national and international partners in academia, industry and Government organizations. The department maintain a strong commitment to active research work, which is reflected in the number of Ph.D. degree awarded, the number of published research articles and the invited presentations of lectures at national and international conferences.
Major Research Interests: Stochastic Processes, Reliability and Survival Analysis, Distribution Theory, Time series Modelling, Applied Probability, Extreme Value Theory, Novelty detection, Neural Networks etc. are the important specializations in the department.
